Car-like handling with SUV-like practicality; excellent warranty
Changes
Since the Sportage got a facelift for 2009, there weren't very many changes to make for 2010. It has an EcoMinder in the dash to tell drivers when their habits are helping with fuel efficiency. An optional back-up warning system is now available as well.
Value
Kia's small utility vehicle is comparable to a Honda CR-V, but is priced about $5000 less. The EPA rates the Sportage as high as 20 mpg city/25 mpg highway for the 4-cylinder engine with an automatic transmission, and it comes with Kia's stellar 10-year/100,000-mile warranty.
Overview
The Sportage is available in two trim levels, LX and EX, and features a choice of two engines: a 2.0L 4-cylinder making 140 hp and 135 lb-ft of torque or a 2.7-liter V6 with 173 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque, available only in the EX. Two-wheel drive with a 4-speed Sportmatic automatic transmission is standard, but the LX can be had with 4-wheel drive and a 5-speed manual with overdrive.
The list of standard safety is lengthy. Dual front airbags and seat-mounted side airbags are included, plus full-length side curtain airbags and front active headrests. The Sportage also has active safety measures, such as anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control and tire pressure monitoring.
The base model LX has 16-inch wheels, roof rails, front and rear tow hooks and a front-end skid plate. The EX adds a sunroof, fog lamps and outside mirrors, plus the larger 6-cylinder engine. The Drop & Fold rear seat is a 60/40 split seat that folds flush with the trunk floor for maximum cargo space when it's needed.
Standard interior equipment includes power windows, power mirrors, illuminated vanity mirrors, rear privacy glass and a 6-speaker CD/MP3 sound system with Sirius satellite radio are found in the LX. The EX will upgrade the seat fabric and cover the shift knob and steering wheel with leather, plus add a sunroof, floor mats, and cargo cover. The EX and LX both have optional iPod integration and navigation system.
